When storing data in the cloud goes wrong
December 10th, 2008
Damn. Gmail won’t give me my contact data at the moment. I need to ship a Christmas gift and I can’t get the address. This highlights an important facet of storing data in the cloud. Have a backup. In this instance, I fail (no backup) and I’ll have to wait. A similar incident a few years ago with an online task list forced me to move all of my todos to a local app.
But I am not giving up on cloud storage and computing. Far from it. In fact, I just launched a small cluster for a production website this week over at Amazon EC2 and I couldn’t be happier. I’ll write about that soon including some implementation details and what was involved in converting the site to run in a cluster.
